一九九四年时，这部风格清新的澳洲电影，相当受到好评，特 别是那别具风格的服装设计，更令人耳目一新，更贴切的藉由影像将阿巴合唱团的音乐与澳洲沙漠的风景巧妙的合而为一。

故事叙述三名变装秀的演员，他们精湛的演出、华丽的舞台服装，为他们赢得喝采……片子一开场，便以「I've Never Been to Me」一曲点破变装秀的心声。而他们最爱的「Dancing Queen」则是他们光华表演生涯的写照。

其中年纪最大的白娜戴特，在自己的脸上已经看到再多的粉也掩饰不住的岁月痕迹，深觉岁月不饶人，加上老友的骤逝，深深的忧鬱紧捉著他。有天，他们有一个新的工作机会，待遇不错，唯一的缺点就是他们必须离开雪梨，大老远的跑到沙漠的另一端表演。他们没有办法负担庞大的运费，索性开著他们那辆紫色的车屋，横渡沙漠……

旅途是艰辛的，无垠的沙漠，炎炎高阳，没事时，穿上戏服放著他们最爱的阿巴的歌，一边想著演出方式，一边唱唱跳跳自娱……而他们明显的特别性倾向，有人不以为然，有人视而不见，却也碰到不少排拒同性恋的人，碰到这种情形时，他们有人觉得非常愤慨，也有宁可息事宁人……倒是白娜戴特在这趟行程里体悟不少人生的道理……

《沙漠妖姬》不是单纯的探讨同性恋，也不只是表现音乐和服装的美，透过同志变装秀的演艺生涯对照一般百姓，也透过一般百性对他们的另眼看待，看到他们面对人生不同的态度，剧中甚至有许多对白都意义深远。演员、摄影和服装设计都非常杰出。由於导演本身就是阿巴合唱团的歌迷，他选用不少阿巴的音乐，也因此原声带，对喜爱这部电影或阿巴歌迷来说，十分值得珍藏。
